There is so much beauty and uniqueness presented at the top of Mount Agung, Karangasem. Other than the beauty of nature, there are also sacred buildings standing in the middle of the road to the summit of the highest mountain in Bali. These sacred buildings are named the Pasar Agung Giri Tolangkir Temple at Sebudi village, Selat subdistrict, Karangasem.
This temple is located in the center of Mount Agung and usually used as the initial point for travelers wishing to climb Mount Agung. All the pilgrims who worship at this temple come from all counties in Bali. This temple is located in the western ridge of Mount Agung. The mountain top or crater sits on the altitude of 3,400 meters above sea level. At this location also sits the Puser Tasik Temple, the location to put animal sacrifice or mulang pakelem.
At the lower courtyard of the Pasar Agung Temple stands the Melanting Temple. Along with the pujawali or anniversary of the Pasar Agung Temple, pilgrims also say prayers at the Melanting Temple. The pujawali falls every full moon in October. The Pasar Agung Temple is estimated to have been established around the 1960s.
This temple has a number of shrines ranging from multi-tiered meru shrine, chamber shrine, bale papelik pavilion, platform, bale gong pavilion and pawedan pavilion. The temple is supported by residents of 16 villages in Selat subdistrict, and four main supporting devotees consisting of the Sogra, Sebudi, Bukit Galah and Pemaksan Sebun customary village.(BTN/ist)
