Endeavor of Karangasem Regency to increase the tourism promotion never subsides. It is evidenced by the rapid improvement of the supporting facilities to bring in tourists. One of which was the realization of the first cruise quay in Indonesia located precisely at the Tanah Ampo, Manggis Subdistrict, Karangasem Regency.
Since tested in 2011, many small and large cruise ships have anchored at this quay. Similarly, the MV Zaandam cruise ship with the Dutch flag was the first cruise docking in 2012 namely on Wednesday (Jan 4). Led by the captain Andre van Schoonhoven the ship berthed at Labuhan Amuk Bay at 08:00 Local Time and then the passengers were transported ashore by boat to Tanah Ampo Quay.
About 1,450 tourists traveled by the cruise ship. It was supported by 615 crews where about 350 of whom were the workers from Indonesia, including Bali (105 people). Due to many crew members coming from Bali, especially from Karangasem, made the crew of MV Zaandam get busy with the arrival of families who wanted to visit the cabin crews. Some of the crews were given permission to go home to visit their family before departing back to Semarang at 11:00 p.m.
Other than receiving the visits of the crew family, the MV Zaandam with a length of 237 meters, width of 32.3 meters and weight of 61,396 gross ton also welcomed the presence of Karangasem Regent I Wayan Geredeg and entourage on board. The visit was intended to promote or introduce the tourist attraction in Karangasem and get an impression as well as input from the cabin crews for the improvement of service quality and operational at the Tanah Ampo Quay along with its supporting infrastructure.
One thing demanded by captain of the ship was to extend the dock to 154 meters so next time the cruise ships coming to the quay could directly berth in the dock. It would ease the handling cost for the ship. Additionally, it would make easier for the purchase of various essential needs such as water, food and fuel.
The Regent Geredeg promised to attempt again to central government in order to realize the desire of the cruise ship. Besides, all the incoming ships wanted the same thing.
Following the arrival of MV Zaandam, another cruise ships scheduled to arrive was the MV Seven Seas Voyager with Bahamas flag on January 10, 2012. It would be carrying 500 tourists coming from Semarang with the next destination to Darwin via Komodo. (BTN/015)
