Gianyar Urban Park is not only a decoration beautifying the look of the town. However, it has already become a tourist attraction. Various flowers growing beautifully make it into a more magnificent place. Moreover, it is also equipped with a statue based on ancient mythologies retaining stories with philosophies and making it look more attractive.
Community of Gianyar town often uses the park as a place for recreation with family. They come to release fatigue amidst the bustles of everyday activities. Besides, the urban park is also able to attract foreign travelers to make a visit. “There are always foreign travelers who take pictures here,” said Wayan Muliana, a local parking attendant.
It is located in the west of the regent’s office. The park is equipped with a statue depicting the turning of Mount Mandara Giri related to the holy water of immortal life or Tirta Amerta. In the middle of the park stands a statue of Garuda Wisnu Kencana, in front of it occurs the Giant Kalarahu, while in the southeast is the statue of Lord Indra with his golden carriage. Meanwhile, in the north of the park lies the statue of the Goddess Sri in the lunar circle.
The statues depict the achievement of gods in acquiring the immortal holy water in the middle of the ocean. Giant Kalarahu then wants to steal and drink it by himself in order to get immortal life. However, the evil intention is known by Goddess Ratih, so that the giant intends to gobble Goddes Ratih symbolized with a moon. Before preying upon Goddess Ratih, Lord Indra shoots him with an arrow at the neck.
According to Muliana, tourist activity usually took place in the afternoon around 6:00 p.m. Many visitors would come on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. During Hindu feast days such as Galungan and Kuningan, the park was also visited by the community. “Travelers coming with travel agency commonly drop in for a while just to take a photograph of the statues,” said Muliana.
More interestingly, crowded visitors on Sundays coincide with the implementation of car-free day around the park or around the Jalan Ngurah Rai and Jalan Ciung Wanara. When the activity takes place, it is also held some art performances, both the traditional and modern ones. By and large, some other attractions are also held so that the park becomes very crowded. “People are also having a promenade accompanied by their pet dog,” he added. (BTN/015)
