Driftwood processing businesses have a niche market overseas. Kalianget village, Seririt, Buleleng, has been tapping into this niche market locally by turning driftwood into a chairs, tables, lampshades, for villas and hotel properties.
Only few people are taling advantage of the driftwood left on beaches by turning into into maketable products.. Driftwood furniture is made by following the natural curves of the wood with the designs based on the requests of consumers. By and large, it is made into chairs and tables ordered by villas and hotels for interior decoration because it offers a very classical apperance.
“At first, I started with my father’s furniture business. After the Bali bombing incident, there we had the idea of processing driftwood. Once processed into various forms, we saw that peole were very much interested and the market continues to grow” said Kadek Iwang Mandela, a fifth-semester student of the Undiknas University, Denpasar.
Driftwood is not only obtained from the shores of Buleleng, but also from a number of beaches around Bali. Mandela collects this marine timber debris according to size. Then, he prepares sketches and shapes. The timber comes from a variety of forms, and is then processed into chairs, tables, bedside lamps, mirror frames and other crafts. Production is carried out regularly based on market conditions. Generally the raw materials needed ito fill one order, fill a container. Because the raw materials are not easy to come by, Mandela tries to stock up on driftwood in anticipation of upcoming orders. This is truly unique and interesting product. Is your curiosity peaked?
